SUMMARY : HALLOWEEN

Last year on Halloween, I had a chance to make my own sugar skull makeup. At first I thought, this makeup is just one of the makeup options for Halloween. It turns out that I was wrong, this makeup is not just a simple makeup by taking the theme of the skull but is actually a cultural heritage owned by Mexicans to commemorate the Day of The Dead which is celebrated on November 1st (Halloween is on October 30th).

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS : FESTIVAL "DAY OF THE DEAD"

"Assured that the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness, Dia de los Muertos celebrates the lives of the deceased with food, drink, parties, and activities the dead enjoyed in life. Dia de los Muertos recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, a continuum with birth, childhood, and growing up to become a contributing member of the community. On Dia de los Muertos, the dead are also a part of the community, awakened from their eternal sleep to share celebrations with their loved ones." (Source : Dia de los Muertos | National Geographic Society)

After reading several articles about the Day of the Dead celebration as well as sugar skull makeup used during this celebration. This celebration is the multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pray for and to remember friends and family members who have died. There is no creepy shape like blood that looks terrible like on Halloween because sugar skull is a form of celebration to remember the family that has been gone so that both of the colors and makeup motifs used are more beautiful for example flowers with vibrant colors.

The sugar skull makeup is known for its vibrant colors, where each one has a meaning:

  • Yellow - Represents the sun and unity, because "under the sun, we're all the same."
  • White - Using this color in decorations represents spirit, hope and purity.
  • Red - Represents blood and life.
  • Purple - Represents mourning, grief an suffering.
  • Pink - Signinifies happiness.

MY OWN SUGAR SKULL MAKEUP

After doing small research for my own form of sugar skull makeup. Finally, I choose pink (happiness) and purple (mouning, grief & suffering) as my main color in this looks. I want to show that even in a state of mourning there is a happy thing, because both the living and the "dead" can still meet at the Dia de Los Muertos Festival.
